History of Doosan and The Puma CNC Turning Center

Did you know?

Doosan is a combined word of “doo” (unit of grain) and “san” (mountain). If combined means “little grains of sand that together make a mountain”.

Small History of Doosan

The company we now know as Doosan Group has its roots in a small shop opened in Seoul in 1896. Once known as a retail and cosmetics store, Doosan grew predominantly after the Korean War. By the mid-1970s, the company’s business units included a news agency, a brewery and several industrial enterprises. By 1979, Doosan exported more than $100 million worth of products. Doosan’s machine tool division (lathes, CNC milling machines) was established in 1976 and entered the Romanian market in 2002.

Puma CNC lathes

In 2005, Doosan buys Daewoo Heavy Industries and thus becomes Doosan Infracore. Daewoo had been producing the Puma lathe since the 1980s, but the company had been struggling since the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s. Over the years, Doosan became one of the largest and most efficient suppliers of Puma lathes.

In 2010, Doosan launches the fifth generation of Puma CNC turning centres: the 2100, 2600 and 3100.

The Puma series CNC machines are CNC lathes that cover all turning needs, in simple or complex configurations, with milling, two-turrets or Y-axis capability.

Over the years, Doosan has been redesigning the Puma series of CNC lathes in order to provide manufacturers with maximum performance and currently there are the following series of CNC lathes designed

The Puma GT CNC lathe series is a high performance, 8/ 10/ 12-inch – a global standard in the horizontal lathe category.

– Doosan’s high-performance series of CNC lathes – PUMA 2100/2600/3100 (Y) has been newly developed to cover a wide range of machining possibilities, with 8-to-12-inch chuck and the possibility of Y-axis or secondary spindle.

– The Doosan – PUMA 4100/5100 series of CNC lathes are horizontal CNC lathes designed for machining medium to large workpieces.

They provide strong machining capability by using a 2-step gearbox and high torque motors, together with a rigid guideway structure. It can also machine complex workpieces using the optional Y-axis function.

– The PUMA 600 / 700 / 800II series features high performance horizontal lathes ideal for

machining pipes and flanges used in the oil and gas industry, hydraulic parts used in construction equipment, as well as complex parts used in aircraft and ships in the construction industry. The maximum turning diameter and length are Ø900mm/ 5050mm, the largest dimenions in its class. The angled bed design allows easy chip removal.

The Puma 1000 is the largest inclined bed lathe produced by Doosan, ideal for rigid machining. The extended internal diameter main spindle can be used for applications such as pipe machining in the oil and gas industry, machining hydraulic components for construction machinery, aerospace or marine industry.

The PUMA series of horizontal CNC lathes also includes:

  • multi-axis CNC lathes (TT / TL series),
  • horizontal CNC lathes for machining aluminium rims (Puma Al Wheel CNC lathes series),
  • horizontal double universal / gantry type loaders (Puma TS / Puma TW series CNC lathes series),
  • horizontal multi-tasking CNC lathes (Puma MX CNC lathes series).
